iKhaya le themba

At presenting I am donating a percentage of every sale to the work of iKhaya le themba in South Africa.

iKhaya le themba offers holistic care to children aged 6-12 years affected by HIV and AIDS in Imizamo Yethu, Cape Town in an after-school care setting.  We hope to develop a model of care that will benefit children throughout the Western Cape .  We are a ministry of Kenilworth Vineyard Church.

At its heart, iKhaya le themba holds the core value that every child is individually loved by the all encompassing love of God.   It is this love that causes us to seek the very best for every child we work with in every aspect of that child’s life.  It is our hope that this love will empower every child to walk fully in God’s plans for them.

At the invitation of a community based nursery school, we begun conversations with the community about how to address the problem of HIV/AIDS orphans.  These conversations, which took place over two years, led us to look for ways to support extended family and friends in caring for orphaned and vulnerable children within their community rather than removing them to residential care.  To this end we offer a broad-based outreach program to 50 children in the afternoons, after school and a specialized service to 20 children directly affected by HIV and AIDS.  We also offer holiday clubs.  Our programs are educational, fun and uplifting and always includes games and afternoon tea.  The programs include Life Skills, HIV awareness and prevention, Social Skills, Food Gardening, Practical Maths, English Literacy and Kids Church .

The children say that we are uplifting them.  When things are bad at home they always know they can come to us and they will feel safe.  When they are together at iKhaya le themba it feels like their family.  The programs are keeping them off the streets and safe from crime and drugs.  The programs also are helping them to pass school.  The children say that we are teaching them that God loves them, no matter what their skin color or what has happened in their lives.
